## Part 1What does a funeral actually cost?

Most people guess low. Here's what typically goes into the bill. These are rounded national figures to give you a feel, not a quote from any funeral home.

~$8,000

**Burial with a viewing**Funeral home, casket, viewing, service and hearse. Cemetery plot, vault and headstone are usually extra.

~$6,000

**Cremation with a viewing**Funeral home, viewing, service and cremation. Direct cremation with no service is much less.

$2,000+

**Everything else**Flowers, obituary, headstone, travel for family, and often a last round of medical bills or credit card balances.

## Part 2Will my coverage be enough?

Pick a coverage amount and the kind of service you'd want. The bar shows what gets used and what's **left over for your family**.

Other bills to clear (medical, cards, etc.) $3,000

## Part 3What might a policy cost me each month?

A rough range to give you a feel for it. Real rates depend on the carrier, your health, your state, and tobacco use. The only real number is the one on a quote.

## Monthly estimate by age, same settings

Rates are locked in when you buy, so the age you start at is the age you pay for, for life. Waiting usually costs more.

## Part 4Which type fits me?

Final expense policies come in three flavors, and your health decides which one you qualify for. All three are whole life: the premium never goes up, the coverage never goes down, and it doesn't expire as long as you pay.

Best rates

### Level benefit

- **Full coverage from day one**
- A few health questions, no exam
- For people in generally good health
- Lowest monthly cost

Middle ground

### Graded benefit

- **Partial payout in the first 2 years** (often 30–70%), full after that
- Easier health questions
- For diabetes, heart history, COPD and similar
- Costs more than level

No questions

### Guaranteed issue

- **Premiums returned plus interest if you pass in the first 2 years**, full payout after
- No health questions at all
- For serious or recent conditions
- Highest cost per $1,000

## Part 5How it works, start to finish

1

**A 15-minute conversation**Your age, rough health, and what you want covered. No exam, no blood work.

2

**Quotes from several carriers**I'm independent, so I compare carriers and show you the real monthly numbers, not just one company's.

3

**Apply by phone or online**Most approvals come back in minutes to a few days. Coverage can start as soon as the first payment.

4

**Your family gets a check**Paid directly to the person you name, usually within days of the claim. They can use it however they need.

## Part 6Common questions

Do I need a medical exam?

No. Final expense is simplified issue: a short set of health questions, or none at all for guaranteed issue. Carriers may check a prescription database.

Can the price go up?

No. It's whole life. The premium you start with is the premium you keep, and coverage doesn't drop as you age.

Is it the same as a pre-paid funeral plan?

No. A pre-paid plan locks you into one funeral home. A final expense policy pays cash to your beneficiary, who can use it anywhere, for anything.

What if I already have a small policy through work or the VA?

Work coverage usually ends when you retire, and VA burial benefits are limited. Many people use final expense to fill the gap.

Does it build cash value?

A little, since it's whole life, but that's not the point of it. It's built for a guaranteed payout, not growth.

How fast does it pay?

Once the carrier has the death certificate and claim form, most pay within a few days to a couple of weeks.

**This page is a simplified, hypothetical example for educational purposes only.** It is not a quote, policy illustration, or offer, and it does not represent any specific carrier or product.

Funeral cost figures are rounded national medians from industry surveys and vary widely by region and provider. Premium estimates are rough ranges for illustration only; actual premiums depend on the carrier, product, your age, gender, state, health history, prescription history, and tobacco use, and are set by the carrier at the time of application.

Graded and guaranteed issue policies pay a reduced benefit during an initial waiting period, typically two years, if death is from natural causes. Terms vary by carrier. Coverage is subject to the application and the carrier's approval. Ask for a carrier quote before making any decision.
